It’s no secret that some people can be scared or intimidated by the thought of their first visit to an orthodontist. Already, people have nerves about dentists, and orthodontists conjure up similar emotions. We happen to feel that knowledge is a powerful tool in combating these fears and anxieties, so that’s why we wanted to break down exactly what you can expect at your first visit so you can rest your mind and be prepared for the experience.

A Commitment to Positivity and Professionalism

First off, before we dig into the nuts and bolts of what happens in the first visit, we want to establish one thing. We strive exceptionally hard to provide you with unequaled professionalism. However, our commitment to the right attitude doesn’t stop there. We aim to give you encouragement, motivation, positive feelings (we dare you to not smile for your whole visit!). Most importantly, we focus on you and your needs throughout the entire visit.

The Goals of the First Visit

We don’t go into a first visit with an assumption of orthodontics care being necessary. The goal of the consultation is to examine if orthodontics is the right choice for you right now. We do this with a variety of diagnostic tools, primarily a panoramic x-ray (the machine actually spins around your head!) and a complete set of photos, both of you and your natural smile and detailed photos of all your teeth. These diagnostic tools allow us to get the full picture of your bite, smile, and jaw, including things not obvious to the naked eye and allow us to present you with all of the information so that we can determine, together, if orthodontics treatment is the right choice at the moment.

Know All Your Options

One of the great things about orthodontics is that there is rarely ever one course of treatment. Generally, you have a variety of options with various pros and cons, depending on your precise situation. We are dedicated to taking you through all of your options from treatment and financial perspective. When you make the decision as to the course of treatment you’ll take, we want you to feel good, knowing you got all of the information you needed and can accurately budget, with no surprises.

Ask as Many Questions as You Want

Especially as you are going through the options for treatment, you may have questions. That’s great! We will be happy to answer as many questions as you have to throw at us. Again, the more you know, the more comfortable you will feel.

Hopefully, this demystifies the first visit to the orthodontist and sets your mind at ease. Contact us today and gain that confident smile.

Here at Burke + Beckstrom Orthodontics, we want you to get the very most out of your Invisalign experience. That’s why we’ve compiled 4 helpful suggestions that will allow you to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment!

1 – Wear your aligners for 22 hours a day.

Dr. Burke and Dr. Beckstrom recommend that you wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours every day. Doing so will allow the technology to effectively and successfully shift your teeth to their new home. The only reason your aligners should be out is when you eat, brush your teeth, and floss. Be sure to replace them as soon as you complete one of those activities. In case you were wondering, your aligners should also be worn while you sleep because your teeth can shift and cause your overall treatment time to take longer than expected.

2 – Keep your aligner trays clean.

Similar to traditional braces, Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned constantly. Be sure to brush your aligners both morning and night. This will allow for any leftover food to be cleaned out and will help your teeth have that nice “invisible” look you love!

3 – Always brush your teeth after meals.

Not only is it important to clean and brush your Invisalign aligners, but it is absolutely vital to clean and brush your own teeth too! Doing so will prevent any food from getting stuck in your trays which will prevent any possible tooth decay. It also helps to keep your trays fitting properly so your treatment is smooth as butter.

4 – Use your aligner case.

This may seem like a small thing but it will save you so much time and money! Whenever you have to take your Invisalign trays out, but sure to place them in their case until you put them back in again. This will help to prevent any accidents where your trays could be lost or thrown in the trash.

So you’re interested in Invisalign but you curious to know, can those clear aligners really fix your overbite? The short answer, yes they can! Let’s dive a little deeper into Invisalign and the process we’ll use at Burke + Beckstrom Orthodontics to fix your overbite with clear aligner technology.

What is an overbite?

An overbite is caused when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth, causing a generous gap between the two. Most individuals have at least a small overbite prior to orthodontic correction.

What kinds of problems can an overbite cause?

If you suffer from a major overbite, you may actually have a deep bite. Deep bites can cause serious problems including excess teeth wear, jaw pain, amongst other things.

Can Invisalign fix an overbite?

Most certainly! Invisalign clear aligner technology can fix an overbite and even a deep bite. When you visit our office we’ll find what treatment type is best for your smile.

Benefits for Kids

  • Traditional braces can make daily hygiene a more cumbersome task. With Invisalign, kids can easily remove their aligners to brush and floss just like they would before corrective gear!
  • With Invisalign, kids can still eat all of those foods that they enjoy without the worry of breaking wires or brackets.
  • Fewer appointments to our offices are needed. As much as we love seeing all of our patients, with Invisalign you only need to visit our office every eight weeks or so making it much more convenient for you and your child!

Benefits for Teens

  • One of the coolest parts of using Invisalign is that it is nearly invisible when you’re wearing it, which is perfect for teens! No more embarrassing school photos or brace-face worries. With Invisalign your family and friends will barely notice.
  • Invisalign is perfect for those who are involved in sports because you can play without the worry of mouth injury that typically comes with traditional braces.
  • Teens have busy schedules. Fewer appointments with Invisalign means you’ll have more time for practice, school, and fun!
  • They’ll have more confidence knowing that you’ll experience fewer emergency visits without the need to fix any broken wires or brackets.

Benefits for Adults

  • One of the greatest benefits for adults is the overall look of Invisalign. You won’t have to worry about pictures and you’ll keep your confidence throughout your treatment.
  • At Burke and Beckstrom Orthodontics, we have our very own adult treatment center made just for you. You won’t have to sit in a waiting room full of teens when you have your appointments. Trust us, you’re going to love your experience.
  • Shorter treatment time. With Invisalign, treatment time is typically shorter than traditional braces.
  • Invisalign works great for multiple types of corrections, especially ones that are more common in adults.

Did you know that there are seven common types of bite problems that occur in both children and adults? Most individuals are born with some type of bite that requires special orthodontic treatment. We’ve compiled a list of the top seven most common bite types that require treatment. Here they are!

1. Crossbite

A crossbite occurs when upper teeth fit inside of lower teeth. The cause of this type of bite can be a misalignment of teeth or of the bone. If not corrected this can often lead to jaw problems as well teeth being worn down quickly in the wrong places.

2. Crowding

Crowding occurs when there is not enough space for existing teeth. This can be a result of teeth that are too large or insufficient space in the jaw. If this is not corrected it can lead to frequent cavities as well as gum disease.

3. Deep bite

This type of bite occurs when the upper teeth cover the bottom teeth too much. If left untreated gum disease and early enamel wear may occur.

4. Underbite

An underbite is when the lower jaw sits in front of the upper jaw. This can lead to irregular face shape as well as excessive tooth wear.

5. Open bite

An open bite occurs when either front or back teeth do not touch with the opposing top/bottom teeth. This will leave a space that leads to swallowing problems as well as possible speech problems.

6. Protrusion

A protrusion is also known as “buck” teeth. This is often caused by the upper jaw being too far forward. Teeth tend to grow at an angle. This makes teeth more prone to chipping and/or excessive wear.

7. Spacing

Spacing occurs when there is too much space between teeth. It can be a result of missing teeth, undersized teeth, or sometimes a combination of both.
