Did you know that over four million individuals wear braces in America? With so many cases, you may be considering wearing braces to treat dental imperfections. Maintaining oral health and hygiene is crucial as it affects not only your appearance but also your ability to chew.

Having problems biting is also known as a malocclusion that occurs due to crowded, crooked, or misaligned teeth. Generally, dental health problems are the result of:

  • Bad Habits: sucking thumb, biting nails, and breathing from the mouth can badly affect your teeth.
  • Problematic Baby Teeth: losing them too early or late can result in misaligned teeth
  • Injury: serious accidents can knock off your teeth, causing them to shift from their original position
  • Genetics: you can even inherit teeth alignment and jaw size from your parents

Who Needs Braces?

Dental health problems that can be treated through braces include:

  • Crowded teeth: It comprises of turns, overlapped, and crooked teeth that can affect your bite. Usually, your genes play a predominant role in crowded teeth, but it can also be a result of thumb sucking and nail-biting
  • Gaps: when there is too much space in between your teeth because of your genetic predisposition
  • Crossbite: when the top row of teeth doesn’t align with the bottom jaw
  • Open bite: when the top and bottom front teeth do not touch each other and put pressure on the one at the back (this also causes chewing difficulty as individuals to find it hard to bite properly)
  • Overjet: when the upper teeth stick out farther from the lower ones. Typically, it happens due to consistent thumb sucking
  • All-gums: when the upper jaw is large, or the upper lip is too thin; it exposes too much of gum tissues

How Can Braces Help You?

Straightening your teeth improves your oral health, boosts your confidence, and gives you a healthy smile. Meanwhile, several other reasons to treat your dental health problems are:

Tooth Decay:

Crowded teeth or ones with gaps are more prone to cavities and gum diseases as they are harder to clean. Moreover, food particles and plaque gets trapped, leading to tooth decay and propagation of bacterial infection. Over time, you can lose your teeth that require costly dental treatments.

Inability to Chew Properly:

Misaligned teeth can hinder basic functions such as biting and chewing. It also wears off the teeth enamel and puts excess pressure on the jawbones. Thus, it increases the likelihood of gum diseases and jaw problems.

Reduces Muscle Tension and Neck Pain

Excessive stress on the bones while chewing increases muscle tension and sore joints. It also leads to constant headaches and pain in the neck.

Mitigate the Risk of Chipped or Broken Teeth

Stuck out or crowded teeth are more at a greater risk of chipping and cracks. Mending broken teeth can lead to expensive orthodontic surgeries and treatment.

On the downside, traditional braces can raise your chances of developing gum diseases as it increases the likelihood of plaque buildup.  Therefore, it is imperative to learn proper cleaning and maintenance of your teeth from a periodontist.

Burke and Beckstrom Orthodontics understands that a smile is more than a smile. It conveys happiness and exudes how you feel about yourself. That is why our staff utilize their expertise and top of the line technology to ensure that your smile reflects that. We offer an array of services that will have you smiling forward, including Invisalign treatments to straighten teeth at a similar cost to the traditional method of braces.

Invisalign technology consists of fitted trays that are molded to the shape of your teeth. The trays are systematically changed out as your teeth alignment progresses. Whether the alignment is a simple or complex shift in your dental structure, Invisalign offers a fast and predictable method for achieving the perfect smile. Beyond getting the smile you have always dreamed of, Invisalign also offers a variety of other benefits, including:

  • Clear aligners that are less obvious than braces
  • No pokey wires or need for brackets on your teeth
  • Less time spent in the office having oral maintenance done
  • Easier upkeep for keeping teeth clean and healthy
  • Similar in cost to braces

Achieving a great smile with Invisalign begins with a consult with your orthodontist. At Burke and Beckstrom, we are happy to walk you through the process. We begin by taking a 3D scan of your mouth so we can custom tailor your dental treatment with precision. From there, we develop a treatment plan that includes wearing your aligners, regular appointments to monitor treatment, and pickup of your next set of aligners as progress is made. With consistency, you will likely begin to see results in a matter of weeks!

After the initial consult, your custom-made aligners are tailored to ensure the right fit. The beauty of the aligners is that they are virtually transparent and easy to take out, leaving little impact on your routine. This is ideal if you want to achieve the look of straight teeth without the upkeep and duration of the “metal mouth” look of having brackets, wires, and rubber bands on your teeth. Cleaning your teeth is much easier without the obstruction of braces.

The length of your Invisalign treatment varies with the complexity of your case, but overall tends to be shorter than wearing braces. And who doesn’t want quick results? Invisalign is a proven method for achieving a look worth smiling about. At Burke and Beckstrom, we provide services for people of all ages who are looking to achieve a great smile with decreased treatment time and increased comfort.

Finally, once you have your beautiful, brand-new smile, Invisalign offers long-term retainers that will keep you smiling for years to come. These ensure that you will not have to worry about shifting and keep your smile in tip-top shape.

Overall, the Invisalign system is a great alternative to traditional braces for those who are looking for faster, simpler results. It is especially great for adults who are looking to avoid the look of having braces or the upkeep of long in-office appointments. If you are looking to achieve great results, Invisalign technology is the way to go, and Burke and Beckstrom is the provider that will get you there.

It’s no secret that some people can be scared or intimidated by the thought of their first visit to an orthodontist. Already, people have nerves about dentists, and orthodontists conjure up similar emotions. We happen to feel that knowledge is a powerful tool in combating these fears and anxieties, so that’s why we wanted to break down exactly what you can expect at your first visit so you can rest your mind and be prepared for the experience.

A Commitment to Positivity and Professionalism

First off, before we dig into the nuts and bolts of what happens in the first visit, we want to establish one thing. We strive exceptionally hard to provide you with unequaled professionalism. However, our commitment to the right attitude doesn’t stop there. We aim to give you encouragement, motivation, positive feelings (we dare you to not smile for your whole visit!). Most importantly, we focus on you and your needs throughout the entire visit.

The Goals of the First Visit

We don’t go into a first visit with an assumption of orthodontics care being necessary. The goal of the consultation is to examine if orthodontics is the right choice for you right now. We do this with a variety of diagnostic tools, primarily a panoramic x-ray (the machine actually spins around your head!) and a complete set of photos, both of you and your natural smile and detailed photos of all your teeth. These diagnostic tools allow us to get the full picture of your bite, smile, and jaw, including things not obvious to the naked eye and allow us to present you with all of the information so that we can determine, together, if orthodontics treatment is the right choice at the moment.

Know All Your Options

One of the great things about orthodontics is that there is rarely ever one course of treatment. Generally, you have a variety of options with various pros and cons, depending on your precise situation. We are dedicated to taking you through all of your options from treatment and financial perspective. When you make the decision as to the course of treatment you’ll take, we want you to feel good, knowing you got all of the information you needed and can accurately budget, with no surprises.

Ask as Many Questions as You Want

Especially as you are going through the options for treatment, you may have questions. That’s great! We will be happy to answer as many questions as you have to throw at us. Again, the more you know, the more comfortable you will feel.

Hopefully, this demystifies the first visit to the orthodontist and sets your mind at ease. Contact us today and gain that confident smile.

Here at Burke + Beckstrom Orthodontics, we want you to get the very most out of your Invisalign experience. That’s why we’ve compiled 4 helpful suggestions that will allow you to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment!

1 – Wear your aligners for 22 hours a day.

Dr. Burke and Dr. Beckstrom recommend that you wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours every day. Doing so will allow the technology to effectively and successfully shift your teeth to their new home. The only reason your aligners should be out is when you eat, brush your teeth, and floss. Be sure to replace them as soon as you complete one of those activities. In case you were wondering, your aligners should also be worn while you sleep because your teeth can shift and cause your overall treatment time to take longer than expected.

2 – Keep your aligner trays clean.

Similar to traditional braces, Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned constantly. Be sure to brush your aligners both morning and night. This will allow for any leftover food to be cleaned out and will help your teeth have that nice “invisible” look you love!

3 – Always brush your teeth after meals.

Not only is it important to clean and brush your Invisalign aligners, but it is absolutely vital to clean and brush your own teeth too! Doing so will prevent any food from getting stuck in your trays which will prevent any possible tooth decay. It also helps to keep your trays fitting properly so your treatment is smooth as butter.

4 – Use your aligner case.

This may seem like a small thing but it will save you so much time and money! Whenever you have to take your Invisalign trays out, but sure to place them in their case until you put them back in again. This will help to prevent any accidents where your trays could be lost or thrown in the trash.

So you’re interested in Invisalign but you curious to know, can those clear aligners really fix your overbite? The short answer, yes they can! Let’s dive a little deeper into Invisalign and the process we’ll use at Burke + Beckstrom Orthodontics to fix your overbite with clear aligner technology.

What is an overbite?

An overbite is caused when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth, causing a generous gap between the two. Most individuals have at least a small overbite prior to orthodontic correction.

What kinds of problems can an overbite cause?

If you suffer from a major overbite, you may actually have a deep bite. Deep bites can cause serious problems including excess teeth wear, jaw pain, amongst other things.

Can Invisalign fix an overbite?

Most certainly! Invisalign clear aligner technology can fix an overbite and even a deep bite. When you visit our office we’ll find what treatment type is best for your smile.

Did you know that there are seven common types of bite problems that occur in both children and adults? Most individuals are born with some type of bite that requires special orthodontic treatment. We’ve compiled a list of the top seven most common bite types that require treatment. Here they are!

1. Crossbite

A crossbite occurs when upper teeth fit inside of lower teeth. The cause of this type of bite can be a misalignment of teeth or of the bone. If not corrected this can often lead to jaw problems as well teeth being worn down quickly in the wrong places.

2. Crowding

Crowding occurs when there is not enough space for existing teeth. This can be a result of teeth that are too large or insufficient space in the jaw. If this is not corrected it can lead to frequent cavities as well as gum disease.

3. Deep bite

This type of bite occurs when the upper teeth cover the bottom teeth too much. If left untreated gum disease and early enamel wear may occur.

4. Underbite

An underbite is when the lower jaw sits in front of the upper jaw. This can lead to irregular face shape as well as excessive tooth wear.

5. Open bite

An open bite occurs when either front or back teeth do not touch with the opposing top/bottom teeth. This will leave a space that leads to swallowing problems as well as possible speech problems.

6. Protrusion

A protrusion is also known as “buck” teeth. This is often caused by the upper jaw being too far forward. Teeth tend to grow at an angle. This makes teeth more prone to chipping and/or excessive wear.

7. Spacing

Spacing occurs when there is too much space between teeth. It can be a result of missing teeth, undersized teeth, or sometimes a combination of both.
